A Time for Whites to Listen

30 Aug

#BlackLivesMatter

Stumbling along the sidewalk

The Black Lives Matter Movement
It has been my experience that the Black Lives Matter movement has started a discussion to take place between people of color and whites, and between whites and whites, about white privilege, racism, prison reform, climate change, minimum wage, the welfare state, law enforcement, and the fact that every human being should have dignity, freedom, equality before the law, a livable wage, clean air and water, a safe and clean place to live, a good education, and everything else that whites have always taken for granted, while wholly or partially denying them to people of color, since the founding of the United States of America.

A Broken Justice System

People of color have always been “second class”, shamed for their “deficiencies”, blamed for allowing or even “instigating” discrimination, persecution, torture, imprisonment and death, all carried out by white figures of authority, who, in the face…

Dear Depression: You’re Tacky and I Hate You

23 Aug

Been battling depression most of my adult life. Sometimes it wins and a few times I win. Wonder which one of us will win the war?

Eating Off Plastic

The following is an open letter to Depression:

Dear Depression,

I am writing to you because I’ve been having some serious concerns with our relationship. I won’t deny the closeness of our bond; we have been friends for many years now, and it often feels as if we are the same person. You know my favorite food, my worst fears, the things that makes me smile, and pretty much everything else – let’s be honest here. You’ve seen me in the shower, for heaven’s sake!

I never wanted things between us to get this intense; to go this far. I knew you liked me from the beginning, and I’ll admit, you seemed strange, but nice nevertheless. I let you into my life, or rather, you let yourself in. I must’ve forgotten to lock my door. From that day forward, you have done nothing but take, take, take. Some people say…

DON’T WORK. BE HATED. LOVE SOMEONE.

23 Aug

This is an excellent blog post. It speaks to me especially as I’m at a crossroads trying to make a decision regarding a soul sucking job.

The new-ness

Read this wonderful speech before watching it

I must say thank you to the faculty and staff of the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information for inviting me to give your convocation address. It’s a wonderful honour and a privilege for me to speak here for ten minutes without fear of contradiction, defamation or retaliation. I say this as a Singaporean and more so as a husband.

My wife is a wonderful person and perfect in every way except one. She is the editor of a magazine. She corrects people for a living. She has honed her expert skills over a quarter of a century, mostly by practising at home during conversations between her and me.

On the other hand, I am a litigator. Essentially, I spend my day telling people how wrong they are. I make my living being disagreeable.

Nevertheless, there is perfect harmony in our…

The Water Treader by Adam Lennon

17 Aug

I spent two weeks on the psych ward. Sadly I’m still fighting without much success.

David Snape and Friends - The place to show off your hidden talents

In late January I dumped an entire bottle of ambien into my mouth, followed by half a glass of vodka. I looked in the mirror and cried, knowing that I would never see myself again. I walked down the hall to the room which had become my prison, and thought about my mom, and how I would be the second of her children that she would have to bury due to mental illness. My thoughts then went to my wife and 3 children, who were in another state at this point, and tried to convince myself that they would be better off without me. I believed that I didn’t have any fight left in me…because the monster speaks to you through your own voice.

I ended up in the psychiatric unit for over a week, perhaps one of the most critical weeks of my life. I remember my first night…

50 Important Facts About Having Anxiety…

4 Aug

#Anxiety I have some of these symptoms but as I’ve gotten older the anxiety has become a little more manageable.

Every Word You Say

I was inspired by this post which listed 50 facts about having autism, so I thought I’d do a similar post about having anxiety. I’ve had anxiety since I was around 10 years old, and if you’ve been following my blog for a little while you’ll know it has improved in the last two years. But I still do have panic attacks and anxiety still plays an important role in my life. I’d love to hear your thoughts about this, and as always I’d love to hear from you if you have anxiety yourself.

  1. We’re not attention seeking. We are genuinely scared of social interactions or triggering situations.
  2. We’re not vampires. Okay yes I am as pale as a piece of paper, and I burn like one too. But I do actually like to go outside, and I do like to socialise it’s just very stressful.
  3. It upsets us if…

Think fast food has to be greasy, unhealthy and cheap? Think again.

The country’s first all-organic drive-thru has finally opened in California, with lines out the door as customers flock for a chance to support what could be the biggest step forward for industry ever.

The new Amy’s Organic Drive-Thru restaurant opened in Rohnert Park, California, featuring an all-vegeterian menu packed with items like veggie burgers, salads, and even mac n’ cheese in both regular and vegan flavors.

The company’s signature frozen pizzas have always been a top seller in health food and grocery stores nationwide, and now Amy’s first restaurant is serving them up piping hot with toppings ranging from spinach and diced tomatoes (on its popular margherita pizza) to regular mozzarella cheese and even vegan “cheeze.”

As reported by ABC-7 News in the Bay area, the new Amy’s Restaurant has…
