Whose Flag?

28 Sep

Whose flag? Take A Knee.

Espiritu en Fuego/A Fiery Spirit

Whose Flag?

Whose Flag? The flag that ignited the Trail of Tears and condemned my Native American Ancestors far from their Promised Land?

The Flag that ignited Manifest Destiny and stole, robbed, cheated and raped millions of Indigenous peoples to broken treaties, destruction and death.

The Flag that ignited the slave ships of the Middle Passage where my African Ancestors were kidnapped from the Motherland. Denied their heritage. Their religion. Their customs and traditions.  And what of those thrown overboard as so much excess baggage.  Or the others who jumped rather than condemn generations to slavery and Jim Crow.

The Flag that ignited the Dred Scott decision telling us we are only 3/5ths of a man? Where are we in the signing of the Declaration of Independence? Do you see any Native or African Americans in those paintings? Not even any women!  So do we salute a flag, a symbol…

Holiday Empty Chairs

17 Dec

Christmas for me is an extremely painful holiday filled with sorrow and sadness. The only good thing is that this year I will be working Christmas day. Tired of the enforced happiness being shoved down your throat so you are practically shitting tinsel and elves. Let’s keep in mind that for some of us Christmas is just another depressing Holiday that I wish I could avoid!!

Espiritu en Fuego/A Fiery Spirit

Their places at the Thanksgiving and Christmas tables have been empty in some cases for many years. Some say you have memories but you cannot speak with a memory and you cannot hug a memory. The tears last forever.

For the ones for which I have no photos I pour Libation and speak your name that your memory may never be forgotten. Wounds that will never heal. Tears that flow like a river into seas and oceans far from the distant shore.  Ase.

Delbert Callahan, Gladys Young, Linda James, Clarence and Mamie Finney and the list goes on of family and friends most taken from this earth way too soon meaning except for two all died in their 50s and 60s. Every year that I get older the more people my age who pass away. Sometimes I wonder if I’ll be next and in what circumstances I will leave this…

Black Friday or Broke Friday?

15 Nov

Don’t Hate!! Donate!! Give to the Needy! Not the Greedy!!

Espiritu en Fuego/A Fiery Spirit

Stephen as Autism Warrior!!

In the USA we have something called Black Friday which is the Friday after Thanksgiving when Americans give into their greed and bombard the department stores and shopping malls in search of discounts and sales on Christmas gifts. This is one of these Holiday traditions that I wish would go by the wayside as it has nothing to do with Jesus or Christianity.  I could go into how I loathe and despise how Christmas has become commercialized but I’ll leave that for another blog post.

I choose Autism Activism over fear of D.T.  I’ll refer to him as Delirium Tremors, mostly because one night while in the Army I had CQ Duty (CQ is Charge of Quarters) and I received a phone call alerting me that one guy in our unit had the D.T.s Delirium Tremors and that he was being taken to the hospital. Alcoholics…

Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, films video for his song “Black Woman” with cast of Afro-Brazilian women in Rio and Porto Alegre

14 Nov

All Hail the Beauty of Black Women!!

Black Women of Brazil

14

Note from BW of Brazil: In a post from November of 2013, BW of Brazil presented an article about an homage to the late, great Nigerian Afrobeat musician Fela Kuti. The Afro Brasil Museum in  São Paulo presented an exhibition featured the album cover art of some of the musicians greatest albums. The homage demonstrated how the musician’s following and influence has grown over the past decade or so within the Afro-Brazilian community. Add to this the fact that a percentage of the Africans brought to Brazil during the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade were of Nigerian origin and the fact that some Brazilians in the state of Bahia still speak the Yoruba language and practitioners of Afro-Brazilian religion Candomblé worship the Yoruba orixá (deity) to which they sing and make incantations in Yoruba during worship sessions and one could say that there is a spiritual connection between Nigeria and Black Brazil.
